Caterpillars & Butterflies!

Hi everyone,

Hope you're all having a good week. I'm finding this week so fast. It's been super productive though, I love that feeling when you've had a few lightbulb days with your kiddies! I'm hoping to do a more detailed post later on in the week about all things caterpillars & butterflies but in the meantime, I thought I'd stick up a collection of poems and rhymes I like to use when teaching about caterpillars & butterflies in spring.

Also, here are some links to some fun songs and stories that would tie in with your teaching about butterflies or caterpillars too! (Butterfly Song) (Story) (Facts) (Lifecycle Song)

Hope they're helpful!

Don't forget to PM on Facebook or comment below if you would like a copy of all the rhymes below!

Songs & Rhymes about Caterpillars & Butterflies

The Cocoon
I found a cocoon
That a caterpillar made,
Fastened to a leaf
Hanging in the shade.
He barely had room
To wiggle or wag,
Like me zipped up
In my sleeping bag.
I looked each time
That I passed his way,
But he never budged
Until just today.
Something happened!
He wagged and wiggled
And then climbed out
And carefullly jiggled
Small wet wings
That grew as they dried.
He'd turned to a butterfly

Birth of a Butterfly
(can be sung to the tune of Hush Little Baby, Don't Say a Word)
A mama butterfly lays all her eggs,
Out pops a caterpillar, crawling on its legs.
The caterpillar first is rather thin,
But then it eats till it bursts through its skin.
After growing nice and big,
The caterpillar climbs on a leaf or twig.
It makes a shell where it hangs inside.
The shell then cracks, and the parts divide.
Inside the shell, a change was going on,
The form of the caterpillar now is gone.
When the shell opens, what comes out?
A beautiful butterfly fluttering about!

Butterfly Cycle
(Sung to the tune of "Row, Row, Row Your Boat")

Hatch, hatch little egg,
I'm so very small.
Teeny tiny caterpillar,
You can't see me at all.
Crawl, caterpillar, crawl,
Munching on a leaf.
Crawling, munching, crawling, munching,
Eat and eat and eat.
Form, form chrysalis,
I'm a different shape;
Hanging by a silken thread
Until I can escape.
Rest, rest, chrysalis
While I change inside;
Now at last my time has come
To be a butterfly.
Stretch, stretch, pretty wings,
It's a special day;
Soon they will be strong enough
For me to fly away.
Fly, fly, butterfly,
Fly from flower to tree;
Find a place to lay my eggs
So they can grow like me.

Tiny Caterpillar
(Tune: She'll Be Coming 'Round The Mountain)

There's a tiny caterpillar on a leaf, wiggle, wiggle!
There's a tiny caterpillar on a leaf, wiggle, wiggle!
There's a tiny caterpillar, a tiny caterpillar
There's a tiny caterpillar on a leaf, wiggle, wiggle!

Additional Verses:

He will eat the leaves around him til he's full, munch, munch.....
A cocoon is what he's spinning for his home, spin,spin....
He will be a butterfly and fly like this flap,flap....

The Little Caterpillar
(Sung to Itsy, Bitsy Spider)

The little caterpillar crawled up into a tree,
Spun his cocoon and slept so quietly,
All through the winter he didn't make a sound,
He dreamt of his new life when he'd be flying all around.
While he was sleeping the snow did gently fall,
Winter came and went, then her heard the robin's call,
"Come on Mr. Butterfly, out of your cocoon
Spread your wings and fly for me, while I sing my tune.
Five Caterpillars (Sung to Row, row your boat)

One caterpillar ,two caterpillars, three caterpillars today.
Four caterpillars, five caterpillars eating all the day.
One cocoon, two cocoons, three cocoons today.
Four cocoons, five cocoons sleeping all the day.
One butterfly, two butterflies, three butterflies today.
Four butterflies, five butterflies, flying, flying away.
Fuzzy Little Caterpillar (Poem)

The fuzzy little caterpillar
In the garden creeps.
He spins himself a blanket
And soon falls fast asleep.
The fuzzy little caterpillar
Wakes up by and by
To find he has beautiful wings
And changed into a Butterfly
I'm a Butterfly...
(Tune: Pop Goes The Weasel)

I spin and spin my chrysalis,
Then I go rest inside.
When I come out,
I've changed indeed...
Look! I'm a butterfly!

Five Little Butterflies

Five little butterflies resting by the door,
One flew away and then there were four!
Four little butterflies sitting on the tree,
One flew away and then there were three!
Three little butterflies up in the blue,
One flew away and then there were two!
Two little butterflies out in the sun,
One flew away then there was one.
One little butterfly, now all alone,
She was feeling lonely so she flew home!
